The Engoitoi Epuan association across two continents

The Engoitoi Epuan project, which means “the path to self-determination” in the Maasai language, was founded in April 2019 by our managing director and project manager, Sara Schälchli, nine Maasai women and the coordinator Kasino. In January 2021, the association was officially founded in Switzerland with headquarters in Zurich. In order to realise our projects successfully and with as few stumbling blocks as possible, it was of great importance to have the association officially registered in Tanzania as well. The international NGO “Engoitoi Epuan” was thus founded in Tanzania in April 2022. The two organisations work hand in hand and are managed by Sara Schälchli.

Our aims

The non-profit organisation aims to support the local population of Africa in an idealistic and humanitarian way. Together with the local population, it is involved in various projects that contribute to the sustainable development of the region concerned. In particular, it aims to promote the self-efficacy of individual project participants and contribute to gender equality. The association pursues neither profit nor self-help purposes and does not aim to make a profit. The Board of Directors works on an honorary basis.

Our standards and values

Our employees follow certain standards and values, whether in project develop-ment or in their day-to-day work. We attach great importance to close monitoring of the projects, with project managers working and living in Tanzania for between four and nine months a year. In addition, the projects are developed and implemented either with the local population themselves or in consultation with local institutions. In doing so, we pay close attention to the local context. More than 120 tribes live in Tanzania, which is reflected in different customs and ways of life. In our projects, we mainly work with people from the Maasai tribe. Never-theless, there are major regional differences depending on the urbanity or rurality of the project location.

Transparent accounting and communication are also important to us. As in life itself, a lot of good things happen in the work of the organisation, but unintent-ional things also happen. All events should be reported openly.

How the association is financed

The association is largely financed by external donations. These come from foundations, (church) communities, private individuals, other institutions and membership fees. To a lesser extent, the association's income is generated through product sales, which flow directly back into the projects.
